Books by Sheldon and Florence Gordon
This groundbreaking statistics text was the first to integrate computer graphics to help students understand all the concepts and methods in introductory statistics and probability. The book impacted all subsequent introductory statistics textbooks. McGraw-Hill Publishing Company.
This collection, co-edited by both Sheldon and Florence, consists of 50 articles, by all the leading proponents of reforming college algebra and precalculus as part of a major NSF initiative. Published by the Mathematical Association of America as part of its prestigious MAA Notes series.
The first edition of Functioning in the Real World was developed under a series of major grants from the NSF. It stresses conceptual understanding and graphical representations of all mathematical ideas and methods using real-world data to motivate the mathematical ideas. The book was awarded First Prize as Best Innovative Project Using Technology (INPUT) in Algebra through Precalculus in a national competition sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation/Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Published by Addison-Wesley Publishing, now a division of Pearson Publishing.
Second Edition published by Addison-Wesley Publishing Company. It was completely rewritten and updated from the first edition.
Chinese translation of Contemporary Statistics: A Computer Approach. Published by McGraw-Hill International.
Statistics for the Twenty-First Century, edited by Sheldon and Florence, is a collection of 25 articles written by leading statistics educators here and abroad on how to teach introductory statistics. Published by the Mathematical Association of America in its prestigious MAA Notes series, the book was used as the primary resource for every subsequent workshop offered by the MAA and the American Statistical Association to train mathematics educators to teach introductory statistics.
A Fresh Start for Collegiate Mathematics is a collection of 25 articles by all the leading proponents of reforming college algebra and precalculus as part of major NSF initiative to rethink the courses below calculus. Florence and Sheldon were co-editors of the volume. Published by the Mathematical Association of America.
College Algebra: Concepts, Data, Models, An Applied Approach to College Algebra is a groundbreaking book to change the focus of college algebra courses as part of a major NSF initiative. Jointly published by the Mathematical Association of America and the American Mathematics Society.
The series of books developed by the Calculus Consortium Based at Harvard were designed to change the focus of calculus courses to better reflect the needs of the students. (Sheldon Gordon was an original member of the Consortium and a co-author of their calculus books.) The books all emphasize conceptual understanding through graphical and numerical developments that focus on real-world applications of the mathematics to re-inforce the actual mathematical needs of all the quantitative disciplines that require calculus of their students. All of these titles have been through many subsequent editions, all of which have been published by John Wiley & Sons. The books have been translated into Spanish, French, Chinese, and Portuguese for use around the world.
Calculus: The Dynamics of Change, co-edited by Sheldon, is an important collection of articles by all the leading proponents of the need to change the focus of calculus courses as an outgrowth of the work done the the MAA's Committee on Curriculum Renewal Across the First Two Years (CRAFTY). It was published by the Mathematical Association of America in its prestigious MAA Notes series.
Calculus and the Computer was one of the very first books written to demonstrate how concepts and methods in calculus could be better understood by students when the ideas are presented in a computer setting.
